Architecture in Greenland: Blending Tradition, Modernity, and the Arctic Landscape

Greenland, with its vast icy expanse and small population, offers a unique architectural landscape shaped by its extreme climate, indigenous culture, and colonial history. Architecture in Greenland is more than just a response to the cold—it reflects a blend of adaptation to the environment, cultural heritage, and the influence of modern design. As the country continues to urbanize and face the challenges of climate change, architecture in Greenland is evolving, yet remains deeply connected to its roots. This long-form blog delves into the architectural journey of Greenland, from traditional Inuit structures to cutting-edge sustainable buildings.

Colourful Nuuk in Winter – Courtesy – Visit Greenland

Traditional Architecture: Surviving the Arctic Climate

Greenland’s indigenous architecture was born out of necessity. The Inuit people, who have lived in Greenland for centuries, developed structures that allowed them to survive in one of the harshest climates on Earth. These traditional buildings were simple yet incredibly effective at providing warmth and shelter.

1. Turf Houses: Earth’s Insulation

One of the most iconic forms of traditional Greenlandic architecture is the turf house. These houses, known locally as “peqipanik,” were primarily built by early Inuit communities. Turf houses were constructed using stones, driftwood, and layers of turf, with walls sometimes as thick as three feet. The design provided excellent insulation against the cold Arctic winds, and the houses were often built partially underground to retain heat.

Turf houses were typically dark inside, with small windows or openings for light, but they offered warmth and protection from the elements. These homes were communal, with several families often living together in a single structure. Today, remnants of turf houses can still be seen in Greenland’s more rural areas, offering a glimpse into the past and how the Inuit people ingeniously adapted to their environment.

2. Inuit Summer Tents and Igloos: Seasonal Mobility

In addition to turf houses, the Inuit used more temporary structures, such as summer tents and igloos. During the warmer months, the Inuit would set up tents made from animal skins stretched over a framework of bones or driftwood. These tents were easy to dismantle and transport, reflecting the nomadic lifestyle of the Inuit as they followed hunting and fishing patterns.

Igloos, though less common in Greenland today, were used during the winter months, primarily by Inuit hunters. Made from blocks of compacted snow, igloos provided surprising warmth, with the interior temperature often reaching above freezing even when it was far below zero outside. These ingenious structures were not only a symbol of survival but also of the Inuit’s intimate knowledge of their surroundings.

Danish Colonial Influence: Colorful Wooden Houses

In the 18th century, Greenland became a Danish colony, and with this came the introduction of European-style architecture. The most visible remnants of this period are the brightly colored wooden houses scattered across Greenland’s towns and cities.

1. Nuuk’s Colonial Buildings

Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, features many examples of Danish colonial architecture, especially in the older parts of the city. The wooden houses, painted in vibrant colors such as red, blue, yellow, and green, contrast sharply with the stark Arctic landscape, creating a visually striking scene. These colors were initially used to designate the function of the buildings—red for commercial buildings, blue for hospitals, yellow for police stations, and so on. Over time, this tradition became more decorative than functional, but the colorful homes have become an iconic part of Greenlandic towns.

2. Lutheran Churches

The introduction of Danish colonialism also brought Lutheran Christianity to Greenland, and with it, European-style churches. These wooden churches, such as the famous Hans Egede Church in Nuuk, are some of the most prominent buildings in Greenlandic towns. Many of these churches are simple in design, with steeply pitched roofs to prevent snow accumulation, but they hold cultural and historical significance for the communities that built them.

Modern Architecture in Greenland: Adapting to New Challenges

As Greenland continues to urbanize, modern architecture is increasingly becoming part of the landscape. The country’s largest city, Nuuk, is at the forefront of this architectural transformation, with a blend of traditional designs and contemporary innovations.

1. The Katuaq Cultural Centre: Northern Lights in Design

One of the most iconic modern buildings in Greenland is the Katuaq Cultural Centre, located in Nuuk. Designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the building’s undulating wooden façade was inspired by the natural elements of Greenland—the waving Northern Lights, the ice, and the mountains. Inside, Katuaq houses a cinema, concert hall, and exhibition spaces, making it a hub of cultural activity.

The use of local materials, combined with a design that reflects Greenland’s natural beauty, makes Katuaq an excellent example of modern Greenlandic architecture that respects its surroundings. It also demonstrates how modern architecture in Greenland is moving toward more cultural and environmental integration, rather than simply importing European designs.

2. Sustainable Architecture and Climate Change

Greenland’s modern architects face unique challenges due to climate change. The melting of the permafrost, rising sea levels, and unpredictable weather patterns require innovative approaches to building design. As a result, sustainable architecture is becoming increasingly important in Greenland, with architects focusing on energy efficiency and resilience.

Many new buildings in Nuuk and other towns are being constructed with materials that can withstand the shifting ground caused by melting permafrost. At the same time, energy-efficient designs, such as well-insulated buildings and modern heating systems that rely less on fossil fuels, are becoming more common.

3. Elevating Buildings to Combat Rising Sea Levels

In coastal areas, where the threat of rising sea levels is most pressing, some buildings are now being designed with elevated foundations to protect against potential flooding. This architectural response reflects the reality of life in Greenland, where the impact of global warming is felt more acutely than in many other parts of the world.

Community-Centered Urban Development

As Greenland continues to urbanize, particularly in Nuuk, there is growing demand for housing and community-centered architecture. The housing developments in Greenland’s cities are designed not just for shelter but for creating a sense of community and connection to the natural environment.

Greenland’s modern housing projects often include communal outdoor spaces, reflecting the importance of outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and hiking in the Greenlandic lifestyle. At the same time, these projects are designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, with a focus on reducing the environmental footprint of urbanization.

Architectural Landmarks: Blending Nature and Modernity

Some of Greenland’s architectural landmarks combine modern design with the country’s stunning natural landscape.

1. Ilulissat Icefjord Centre

The Ilulissat Icefjord Centre, located near one of Greenland’s most famous ice fjords, is a striking example of contemporary architecture. The building, designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, features a curving steel and glass structure that mimics the shapes of icebergs. The centre offers visitors breathtaking views of the surrounding ice fjord while blending into the natural landscape.

2. University of Greenland

Another modern architectural highlight in Nuuk is the University of Greenland. The university building is designed to reflect both modern European influences and traditional Greenlandic elements. Its design balances functionality with cultural expression, providing a space for Greenland’s future leaders to learn and grow.

The Future of Greenlandic Architecture

Architecture in Greenland is a fascinating blend of tradition, adaptation, and innovation. From the ancient turf houses that provided shelter for the Inuit to the modern, sustainable buildings rising in Nuuk, Greenland’s architecture is deeply connected to its environment and culture. As the country continues to face the challenges of climate change and urbanization, architecture will play a critical role in shaping Greenland’s future—respecting the past while embracing the need for modernity and sustainability. Whether it’s the colorful colonial houses of the past or the energy-efficient buildings of the future, Greenland’s architecture will always tell the story of its people and their resilience in the face of nature’s extremes.

Aura Collection,Dubai: A New Kind of Luxury in Living

The year 2020 marked the beginning of Aura Collection, which was established by a group of imaginative architects and entrepreneurs. These individuals come from a variety of backgrounds, each with a wealth of knowledge and experience, but they are united by a single mission: the aspiration to establish a new sort of luxury in living. Aura Collection has established itself as a leading design and construction company in Dubai and the Middle East and North Africa area, having designed and constructed a number of the most renowned sites and locations.

Drawing from diverse backgrounds and expertise, the team behind Aura Collection is united by a singular goal: creating spaces that blend opulence, innovation, and sustainability.

Residential Projects:

Here is one of their standout residential projects:

Villa G06

Palm Jumeirah | Dubai

G06, from the very beginning of its construction, was a house that was supposed to express a sense of luxury that reflected peace, openness, and silence.

A desire to create a home that was humble rather than loud was our objective from the start which we consistently pulled ourselves back to throughout every decision and notion that we would form. While we intended the home to provide its residents elegance, functionality, and simplicity, we more than anything wanted it to offer an experience.

Commercial Projects:

One of their remarkable commercial projects include:

HORTMAN HOLDING HEAD OFFICE

ONYX TOWER | DUBAI

The brief of this project posed a very interest challenge. While the customer requested an office that had a sense of futurism, we asked ourselves where and how to draw the common line between the “futuristic” and the “simplistic”.

PORTLAND, Oregon, Aug. 15, 2024

The Portland International Airport (PDX) main terminal expansion opened to passengers on August 14. Designed by ZGF for the Port of Portland, the one million square foot (93,000m2) project doubles the capacity of PDX and enables the airport to welcome 35 million passengers annually by 2045.

Featuring a 9-acre (37,000m2) mass timber roof, the new terminal evokes the feeling of walking through a Pacific Northwest forest. Views to the airfield, abundant natural light, and interior landscapes that reflect the natural beauty of the region are present throughout the passenger journey.

The expanded terminal is the largest mass timber project of its kind, and it is designed with people and place at its heart. Intimate plazas with tree-lined retail concessions recall Portland’s pedestrian-friendly streets. Urban furniture and plant-filled gathering places at various scales invite travelers to relax and enjoy their surroundings in a sanctuary of well-being.

Portland Airport architecture
As passengers leave ticketing and enter the central threshold, daylight filters through the mass timber roof lattice and large skylight openings, like light filters through the trees within the protection of a tree canopy.- Photo used with courtesy.

Instead of building an entirely new terminal, the Port of Portland and ZGF decided to renovate and expand in place, keeping the airport fully operational throughout five years of phased construction while realizing schedule, time and carbon savings. The strategy was made possible, in part, by a prefabricated wood roof that spans the expanded lobby, check-in, and security areas.

An engineering marvel, the mass timber roof is the centerpiece of the expansion. It celebrates the state of Oregon’s history of forest product innovation while showcasing what is possible for the future of mass timber design and sustainable wood sourcing. All of the 3.5 million board feet (8,250 m3) of wood for the roof is sourced from within a 300 mile (480km) radius of the Portland Airport and includes wood from small family-owned forests, non-profits, and tribal nations.

The project’s sustainable design sets a new standard for airports worldwide. The main terminal achieves a 50% reduction in energy use per square foot with a highly efficient, all-electric ground-source heat pump while doubling terminal capacity. A second phase of the project is underway now and will complete in early 2026.

About: TSP, Inc. is a multidisciplinary design firm offering architecture, engineering, and planning services.

History: In 1930, Harold ‘Spitz’ Spitznagel started his architectural firm with a working capital of $20 and rented an office for $15 per month. In the past, people valued their promises and a simple handshake was considered as reliable as a formal agreement.

The local media praised his initial significant endeavor, a new City Hall in Sioux Falls costing $425,000, as a “masterpiece of beauty and utility.” During the 1930’s and 40’s, a variety of projects were undertaken, including the construction of a resort hotel, movie theater, multiple churches, a radio station, an apartment complex, a department store, a country club, and other mansions that received awards. Over time, Spitz gained notable acclaim for his artistic and architectural contributions to religious establishments.

SEASIDE, Oregon, Aug. 13, 2024

Today, CareOregon and Columbia Pacific Coordinated Care Organization (CCO) celebrated the grand opening of the Hawk’s Eye Apartments, a milestone in a collaborative effort to address the housing crisis impacting the health and well-being of people living in Northwest Oregon.

CareOregon and Columbia Pacific celebrate grand opening of new Hawk's Eye Apartments

The apartment building was formerly a Red Lion Inn & Suites and has now been converted into a mix of workforce housing for Columbia Pacific’s contracted network of providers – including social service providers and health care workers – as well as permanent supportive housing, which will be managed by Clatsop Behavioral Health. CareOregon and Columbia Pacific leaders gathered with elected officials, community partners and others to commemorate the grand opening at an onsite ribbon-cutting event.

The completion of the Hawk’s Eye Apartments adds 55 new units (mostly studio apartments) at market rate to Clatsop County, which has Oregon’s highest rate of per-capita houselessness. Nearly 23 out of every 1,000 Clatsop County residents are unhoused, according to 2023 state data. The region’s affordable-housing shortage not only impacts existing community members but also makes it difficult for local health care employers to attract and retain workers, exacerbating access challenges.

From hotel to home

CareOregon, Columbia Pacific’s parent organization, purchased the former hotel in early 2023. The organizations broke ground on the conversion project in November 2023. Two Oregon-based firms – Bremik Construction and CIDA Architecture (a woman-owned firm) – served as the design-build contractor. Converting an existing structure allowed CareOregon and Columbia Pacific to complete the project relatively quickly while keeping costs down.

Columbia Pacific has contracted with Pinehurst Management to provide onsite property management. Clatsop Behavioral Health, a longtime Columbia Pacific clinical partner, will provide services to future residents needing support to retain and manage their housing units. All units are equipped with a private bathroom and kitchenette. The property has a community room for use by residents and the public.

“This project will make a significant difference in many people’s lives,” said Amy Baker, executive director of Clatsop Behavioral Health. “It addresses one of the most critical aspects to well-being – especially for people living with behavioral health challenges – which is safe, affordable and supportive housing.”

The housing-health connection

CareOregon and Columbia Pacific’s housing work is rooted in a firm belief in the connection between safe, affordable housing and health.

Children who experience housing instability are more likely to engage in early drug use and suffer from depression. What is more, the excessive cost of housing may force people to choose between paying for rent and getting timely medical care, resulting in unnecessary emergency room visits. Affordability issues can also exacerbate food insecurity and other health-related social issues. In addition, housing has been a top issue identified by the local communities for Columbia Pacific to address in both its 2020 – 2024 and 2025 – 2029 community health improvement plans.

Long-term focus on housing

While the grand opening of the Hawk’s Eye Apartments is an exciting milestone for CareOregon and Columbia Pacific, it is just one of many housing investments that Columbia Pacific has made over the last four years.

Since 2020, Columbia Pacific, together with some of its largest clinical partners, has invested nearly $6 million to address housing needs in Northwest Oregon, where the proliferation of short-term rentals and a limited supply of developable land have led to a severe shortage of affordable housing. These investments add up to roughly 350 new affordable housing units in the region.

With the Hawk’s Eye Apartments, Columbia Pacific has taken a slightly different approach to its housing work. In general, the coordinated care organization works to increase the supply of affordable housing by providing crucial financial support for projects undertaken by developers and community-based organizations. Through its Regional Housing Impact Fund, Columbia Pacific also provides critical financial support to local nonprofits serving community members experiencing houselessness

New York City is known for its distinctive skyline, bustling streets, and thriving cultural scene. Yet, amidst the concrete jungle, there is a revolutionary initiative that aims to alter urban living and leisure: Plus Pool. This innovative floating pool, which will be anchored in the East River, combines architectural, environmental sustainability, and public involvement, making it one of the most ambitious urban projects in recent memory.

+ Pool brings back river swimming to New York

+ Pool, named after its unusual plus-shaped design, is more than just a pool; it’s a public space that encourages New Yorkers and visitors to reconnect with the city’s waterways. Plus Pool, the creation of designers Dong-Ping Wong and Archie Lee Coates IV, was created in response to a scarcity of accessible, clean swimming pools in New York City. The concept was simple but revolutionary: a pool that not only floats but also filters the river water, making it safe to swim.

Architectural Innovation

Plus Pool’s architecture is both functional and visually appealing. Its plus-shaped design accommodates four unique swimming zones: a lap pool, a sports pool, a children’s pool, and a lounge pool. This design guarantees that the space accommodates a variety of activities and age groups, promoting inclusivity and community involvement.

What distinguishes Plus Pool from regular swimming pools is its integrated filtration system. The pool’s sides are built of a multilayered filtration membrane that purifies the river water as it flows through, removing impurities and pollutants. This technique not only ensures that swimmers have clean water, but it also adds to the river’s general health by gradually improving water quality.

Sustainability at the Core

Plus Pool represents the emerging trend of sustainable building and urban design. The project’s main concept, which uses natural filtration to cleanse the East River’s water, demonstrates its dedication to environmental responsibility. Plus Pool tackles a significant issue in urban water management while also providing a sustainable recreational solution via the use of technology and design.

Furthermore, Plus Pool serves as a public showcase of the possibilities for future urban infrastructure initiatives. It defies preconceived preconceptions about what a swimming pool may be, pushing design boundaries to create a space that is not only useful and beautiful, but also environmentally responsible.

Public Engagement and Community Impact.

Plus Pool has been a community-driven enterprise from its inception. The design team has aggressively engaged the public in the creation process, through crowdfunding campaigns and collaborative design workshops. This engagement has instilled a strong sense of ownership in New Yorkers, making Plus Pool a symbol of what can be accomplished when a community band together to support creative ideas.

Plus Pool is intended to serve as both a recreational facility and an educational platform. The project’s goal is to increase awareness about the value of water quality, environmental care, and the possibilities of sustainable urban architecture. Plus Pool will engage with local schools, environmental organizations, and cultural institutions to provide educational programs and events that will inspire the future generation of architects, designers, and environmentalists.

Challenges and Future Prospects.

While Plus Pool’s premise is clearly intriguing, the initiative has experienced a number of hurdles. Regulatory constraints, environmental concerns, and funding have all provided significant challenges. However, the design team’s dedication and enormous public support have kept the project on track.

When open for public this summer, it will be a tribute to the power of inventive design, public participation, and environmental stewardship. It will not only give New Yorkers with a one-of-a-kind recreational place, but it will also serve as a model for future urban developments worldwide.

Plus Pool is a daring reinvention of urban space, combining architecture, sustainability, and community engagement in a way that few other projects have. It represents the spirit of New York City: inventive, resilient, and forward-thinking. As the project approaches opening, it aims to change the city’s connection with its waterways, creating a floating paradise that is both invigorating and visionary.
